What is Sitemap?

Sitemap, as the name suggests, a detailed information about given website. Sitemap is something designed to explain your blog or non-blog website. In My words, “It’s nothing but “CALL BELL FOR SEARCH ENGINES”.

 It is a XML file so usually called XML-Sitemap. Sitemap contains lists of website URLs by the side of   metadata about site URLs. Sitemap includes most updated information about website URLs with the help of updated metadata of related URLs. It tells about each any everything such as Video data, image, mobile content, news or blog content, source codes available, update date and geographical data. It is the fundamental reason to use Sitemaps for search engines indexing. Updated information can grant better results in search engines crawl.   

Why Sitemap?

Crawler can read metadata only and metadata tells about related URL positioned on website. In this course, web crawlers notice pages from links of sites.

In simple language we can say, search engines eat blog posts with the help of Sitemap and metadata helps in picking the best food.

 You have submitted your website to search engines with the help of Sitemap. Now Sitemap does not guarantee of indexing in search engines. Sitemap is just a way to notify crawler about your updated website data.

Google and Sitemap

There are many formats of web Sitemap such as RSS feed, Atom feed, text file, XML Sitemap, mRSS etc.  Most of the search engines recommend only Sitemap protocol based Sitemap. This is because of its acceptance in search engines.

If you are fan of Google, search engine and want to submit your site to Google.  You have many options. RSS feeds, Atom feeds are acceptable by Google, Bing and yahoo as Sitemap of your blog website.

You can create  manually using third party Sitemap generator application.

You can download desktop tools for Sitemap generation such as GSiteCrawler , GWebCrawler &  Creator , G-Mapper ,   Generator by DevIntelligence . You can use online services for generating map of your blog, AuditMyPc.com   Generator , AutoMapIt , Free Sitemap   , Neuroticweb.com  Generator ,  Doc ,  xml  etc. 

Do not forget “Google hold on only sitemap protocol 0.9 by sitemap.org. 

There is a highly recommended format of Sitemap available for media content on blog site. That is mRSS (Media Real Simple Syndication).You can use mRSS instead of adding video   information into Sitemap.
